Pallets in Seattle–Tacoma

Puget Sound combines port import volume with a climate that is genuinely hostile to outdoor-stored wood. Cores are available; keeping them dry is the whole operational challenge, which makes heat treatment and covered storage more valuable here than in any other market we serve.

Local market

What moves through Seattle–Tacoma

Port volume supplies the market adequately, but moisture-driven quality attrition removes stock that would survive elsewhere. Appearance-sorted grades cost more here for good reason.
  • The Kent Valley from Tukwila to Sumner is the region's distribution spine and its main core generator.
  • Sustained winter rainfall means uncovered pallets gain weight, grow mould shadow and fail appearance sorts within weeks.
  • Aerospace and its supplier network drive steady demand for heavy custom builds and export crating.

Through the year

How this market behaves seasonally

Pallet supply moves on retail and industrial cycles, and those cycles differ by metro. Planning against the local pattern is worth more than any negotiated discount.
  1. Oct–Apr

Sustained rainfall. Uncovered pallets gain 8–10 lb of water, grow mould shadow and drop a grade within weeks.

  2. May–Sep

Dry window. Best period for appearance-sensitive buying and for drying out stored stock.

  3. Q4

Import peak plus the wet season together — the tightest window for A-clean stock.

  4. Year-round

Covered storage on both ends is the cheapest quality control available in this market.

Local access and routing notes

The details that decide whether a delivery lands cleanly, gathered from actually running these lanes.
  • Everything here is stored covered, ours and increasingly our customers'. It is not a preference, it is what keeps stock at grade.
  • The Kent Valley from Tukwila to Sumner is the region's distribution spine and its main core generator.
  • Aerospace suppliers frequently need heavy custom builds and export crating together — quoting both at once usually saves a week.
  • Routes run Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Seafood and food processing customers often need to sit outside that pattern; ask.

Questions

What buyers in Seattle–Tacoma ask

Market-specific answers, not the national FAQ repeated.

Why does appearance-sorted stock cost more in Seattle?

Because the climate removes stock that would pass elsewhere. Sustained winter rainfall means uncovered pallets gain weight, grow mould shadow and fail an appearance sort within weeks, so the yield from any given intake is lower.

Should I specify heat treatment even for domestic freight here?

It is worth considering. Treatment drops moisture to 15–20%, which resists mould and cuts 6–10 lb of water weight per pallet. In this climate that is a quality decision as much as a compliance one.

Do you supply the aerospace supplier network?

Regularly, and it usually means heavy custom builds plus export crating rather than standard stock. Remember that internal bracing inside a plywood crate is wood packaging under ISPM-15 even though the plywood itself is exempt.

How do you keep pallets dry around Puget Sound?

Covered storage at both ends, ours and increasingly our customers'. A pallet left uncovered through a winter here picks up 8–10 lb of water and drops a grade. The storage cost is smaller than the grade loss almost every time.

Does the climate change what I should specify?

It changes moisture content more than structure. Specify a maximum moisture content and covered handling rather than reaching for a higher grade — a Grade A pallet stored uncovered through February will underperform a Grade B one that stayed dry.
